Chunfeng Songyue Vegetarian Restaurant was founded in the second year of Qing Dynasty Emperor Xuantong (1910). Originally located at Ninghui Pavilion, West Garden of City God Temple, it was relocated to its present site at the end of 1990s. The original owner had been preparing vegetarian food since childhood and was excellent in cooking. He stuck to pure vegetarian food, allowing for no meat dishes. The monastery-like dietary habit has become a tradition passed down to present time. As a result, the restaurant is reputed to be Shanghai’s No. 1 Pure Vegetarian Restaurant. In the past on the west of the temple gate there was a Longshun Restaurant, which, according to legend, derived its name from Emperor Qianlong’s having vegetarian dinner there in plain clothes. In the early years of the Republic of China, Longshun Restaurant failed because of poor management and was merged by Chunfeng Songyue Vegetarian Restaurant. Ever since Chunfeng Songyue Vegetarian Restaurant has become even more famous. The owner is good at selecting materials and absorbing the characteristics of various styles. The names for meat dishes are borrowed, and the techniques for meat dishes are also employed to prepare pure vegetarian food.
