It is said that the mother of the Tang Dynasty Prime Minister Wei Zhen once suffered from coughing and asthma. And her illness worsened because she disliked the bitter medicine prescribed by imperial doctors and refused to take it. As an extremely filial son, Wei Zhen was greatly worried. He suddenly thought of his mother’s like of raw pear, which had the efficacy of removing phlegm and relieving asthma according to his little stock of medicine knowledge. Thus he added sugar to pear juice, and put in almond, bulbus fritilariae, and pine nut to decoct pear syrup, which tasted sweet and fragrant. The minister’s mother was willing to take it after tasting the decoction, and was soon healed of the cough. When the news spread, people in and outside the court asked him for the prescription. Pleased to benefit others, Wei Zhen gave detailed instructions of the prescription and the method of decoction. Both high officials and common people tried their best to imitate the prescription. Through centuries of development, the widely circulated prescription evolved into today’s pear sugar.
